Tinker Hatfield's heritage

Tinker Hatfield's heritageThe first two models designed for Michael Jordan certainly didn't meet his expectations. The project than was given to Tinker Hatfield and it's safe to say that no one was expecting such a revolution. It was just the thing and up to this day Jordan 3 is highly praised and sought after by the collectors. The idea behind, was a luxurious basketball shoe, solid and made with high attention to details.

As a result we got a 3/4 mid-height leather upper, a new Jumpman logo (based on a picture of Michael Jordan doing a dunk), visible Air system and iconic Elephant Print. The Air system was at that time a huge, revolutionary thing. The Jumpman logo replaced earlier version with a ball with wings and became one of the most easily and widely recognizable symbols connected to footwear.

The „3” was made the same year as MJ's great achivements: the best defensive player of the year, winner of Gatorade Slam Dunk Champ, MVP - All Star, MVP – 1987-1988 season and Scoring Champion. Nobody else managed to achive such things in just one season.

Tinker Hatfield designed all the following Jordan models and became friends with MJ, creating history of the Jordan brand together. They hired a young American director Spike Lee to film a commercial for the brand. He created a character called Mars Blackmon, who became a cultural icon that last up to this day. Spike Lee and his work were there to promote next shoes of the Jordan series.
